Fushan Tunnels
I combined my class time with Chris Cronin, our Physical Education teacher, to take the ninth and tenth grade students to Fushan. Mr. Chris led the way up mountain paths to the top where everyone viewed the expanse of Qingdao, took pictures, and entered dark tunnels. The tunnels were created by the occupying Germans and contained cell-like compartments and turret holes. The students explored the tunnels as a group, seeing the view that former soldiers would have seen. At one point, they turned off their flashlights and listened by candle light as I read the beginning of a novel that is set in a dark tunnel. The students continued their study of the novel, Anthem, for the next several weeks in my class.
